Bess
turned out to be the "No, I don't want a third Gordon" Gordon.
I had been sticking to my guns, my new house could only
handle two Gordons…until I looked at that face. Bess
is a lap dog, a climb up your body to your shoulder dog,
a fly around the yard with a death wish dog, a make you
laugh until you cry dog and a "throw-me-the-tennis-ball,
huh, huh - throw-me-the-tennis-ball, huh, huh" until
you want to scream dog.
She went to Maine, as a youngster, to help support a major
and brought it home with her instead. She had never met
a quail, or been off lead, but when put down at the starting
line at her first Hunting Test, she decided birds were
her newest mission and she finished her Junior Hunter title
with four straight qualifying runs, all 9's and 10's.
I caught her running through the yard, teasing the other
dogs with something in her mouth….as she flew by
I saw two little legs sticking out between her front teeth.
When I called her to me, expecting to discover the worst,
she spit out a very wet, very dazed and very much alive
chipmunk.
She can eat her dinner in 15 seconds flat and she can make
me laugh in even less time. We spend lazy Sunday afternoons
on the deck, with Lena and Ella lying by my feet…and
Bess sitting in my lap, head hung over my shoulder, snoring
in the afternoon sunlight.
Bess now spends her 'off' time running the show, down in Pinnacle, North Carolina keeping Beth's boys 'in line'.
Bess is one of those Gordons that 'needs a job' and when she is with Walter Cruz (Cruz Kennels) she is working hard and loving every minute of it.
Walter and Bess got her Senior Hunter title in pretty short order and now, with one leg already, she is working towards her Master Hunter title...."You Go Girl !" |
