To
the Bridge: On June 17, 2006, Maggie sustained a
massive coronary and was taken from me prematurely and suddenly
without warning. I am grateful for the short years with her,
and will mourn her loss for the rest of my life. My only
comfort is that I know she is chasing chipmunks and birds
on the other side while waiting for me to join her. A part
of my heart goes with her.
On the
recommendation of Matt and Wendy Czarnecki, I contacted Cindy
McGovern about one of her pups from a field bred litter.
I wanted to get involved in field competition again. The
pups were born in late May, and I was to fly out and pick
her up on September 16th, 2001. That, of course, was the
week of the 911 tragedy. My employer strongly advised NO
travel and though I didn't want to fly after that happened,
I had anxiously been waiting for this little girl for weeks!
She came to me several months later, much to my anxiety over
her flying by herself. And I expected to see a rather small
girl, and certainly with not much coat. Out of the crate
comes this sweet girl, of medium size, AND lots of beautiful
coat! I thought to myself, Oh My Gosh! This girl is gorgeous!
She wiggled and kissed me and climbed on me, oblivious to
all the sounds and sights of the baggage claim area at the
airport, and calmly walked next to me all the way to the
car. On the way home, a good hour and a half drive, she curled
up on the front seat and went to sleep. Sweetness quickly
became her nickname, and the minute I got her home that night,
I stacked her on a table to make an assessment.
Her ring career speaks for itself, as she quickly finished
her championship at 20 months, earning her first major from
the puppy class, beating 6 dogs for Best of Winners. Now, I
could play in the field with her. And what a pistol! I remember
watching the German breeds run big and hard, thinking how fun
it would be to have a show Gordon that would do that, and here
she is!
Her breeder, Cindy McGovern took her out in California and
finished her second two legs on her JH, and then proceeded
to run her in FT Derby. The first place ribbon, and her first
points in a Field Trial convinced me that she should go into
serious training with Trena Cardwell, in Washington State.
Maggie was with Trena for a year before coming home to grow
up some, and be a couch potato for a while. Trena's assessment
of her was, "She has talent and desire, the two things
a dog must have, or I won't take them. She can finish
her FT Championship." Many thanks to Cindy for entrusting
this sweet girl to me. And to Trena for seeing in her what
I'd hoped to find. We're in no hurry, but we know where we're
going!
Eager
to please and the best of companions, Maggie is my 'heart
dog'.
