When
I went to pick Zorro up at 8 weeks, Susan and Derek Gould expected
me to choose Zorro's brother; a brighter pup, with a mellow
personality. However, upon seeing Zorro, and his beautiful
dark eyes and coloring, I just had to pick him up. He tolerated
this for the split second it took to take a picture. Then he
squirmed in my arms to be let down, giving me a little voice
that said, now! When I put him down, he immediately ran ten
feet away and turned back to look at me and bark. The twinkle
in his eyes told me he would be full of life and sparkle. I
was hooked. He was mine from that instant on.
Zorro has grown into the big man that he is, with all the qualities
I knew he would have the day I met him at 8 weeks old. At 27" tall,
with just the right amount of bone, he moves with the grace of
a dancer. Best of all, he loves everyone and everything, including
my cat, who is King of all creatures great and small.
Considering that Zorro has never really grown up, and still bounces
his 90lbs all over the house at 4 years of age with a toy in
his mouth, and considering that Zorro has his own "agenda" at
the most inopportune times, this has just added to the amusement
of the audience and the test of wills between Zorro and his handler.
Zorro still makes me smile when I pull into the driveway and
hear him "singing" in greeting. And bolting out of
his crate like a bull coming out of the chute, he makes a beeline
for his toys to make the rounds.

Update
Nov 2006: When Maggie left us for the Bridge, Zorro
became very lethargic and depressed. Two weeks following,
we had a near miss with bloat. Fortunately Zorro passed the
blockage (which turned out to be a small squeak toy), but
not without having his belly shaved in preparation for possible
surgery. As a result, Zorro is taking a break from the show
ring to grow his coat back. He is back to his happy self,
and thinks Jade is another squeak toy, but that's another
story....
